Are Mammograms Necessary?

A recent article from the Wall Street Journal questions the necessity of Mammograms.

They also recommend that physicians abstain from teaching women how to examine their breasts for signs of cancer because of a lack of evidence that it is of any benefit.
The guidelines were based on a routine review of research published since the last set of recommendations and a new analysis of data. The guidelines were formed by weighing benefits of screening compared with the harms of false positives, such as anxiety and unnecessary additional tests and biopsies…..

In January 1997 the National Institute of Health held a consensus conference on the value of screening mammography for pre-menopausal women. After listening to the scientific presentations, the Committee decided that the scientific evidence did not support the notion that pre-menopausal women (age 40-49) should have screening mammography The scientific evidence shows that this procedure has no scientific basis and in some instances is even harmful; yet, it is still recommended, taught and used.

HAS ANYTHING CHANGED IN 12 YEARS??????

The answers to the serious problem of breast cancer in premenopausal women are not found in screening mammograms. The answers lie in avoiding the birth control pill, avoiding hormone replacement therapy, avoiding radiation, breastfeeding your babies and getting your Vitamin D level above 60ng/ml. The epidemic of breast cancer is real, but let’s focus on the causes rather than on palliative treatments which do not work!!

I just spoke with Dr. Brouse and he said that there are so many gene factors that do not even get turned on with inadequate amounts of Vitamin D3. While many say that you should shoot for around 50 ng/dl he thinks that 75 ng/dl is optimal. If you are younger then perhaps an additional 5K of D3 daily is good. If one is calcium deficient then you might add 10K a day of D3 and if you are the older generation you might even look at 10K for 6 days and one 50 K D3 weekly.

To know where your D3 level is you can request your Doctor do a D3 test or you can call Dr. Brouse’s office at 503-654-3225.
